Photography... What Does it Mean to You?

Some of you may have been a part of photography for so long that you don't know how it made anything different. I got my first camera (Pentax Spoto F) from my Grandpa way back when I was a child and ever since then, the world has looked like art waiting to happen. It felt like I just got glasses or something, and my eyes worked the way they were supposed to. The world is so beautiful, and my camera is my means of preserving that beauty. What I personally like so much about photography is how the little frame into which you put only a little part of the big whole can enhance that little part, give it a life of its own, a meaning of its own. You can pick out beauty, make it seen where others would say: "What on earth is he/she on about, why does he/she want to take a photo THERE?", to only later say about the photo itself: "Hey now, THAT was there? Never noticed!" But as a photographer you begin to notice, and yes, indeed, you "see" differently, you get "new eyes". And I find those "new" eyes are a very valuable addition to my life. They make it broader, fuller, more complete.

I have always appreciated other's photos but have always wonderd if others feel the rush in and excitement in seeing my own shots. Photography was a hobby I just fell into but nothing else I have ever done has made such an impact on how I view my surrondings. My girlfriend and friends think I'm crazy when I talk about how much I'm in love with the art of photography and often get board as a go on and on talking about a location I have found or a new camera I have aquired. I get great pleasure from shareing the beauty that photography has put into my life, I'd like to hear about how it has effected yours. What does photography mean to you?

For me it is definitely about seeing something ordinary and photographing it in a way that makes it extraordinary, showing the world what they miss everyday in their lives by passing over the details. I like to photograph things that catch my eye, which often is what you said, other people might not have even noticed it in the first place. I use my photography to show pieces of my life, my style, and the things I find beautiful & interesting.

It is an opportunity to show others exactly how we view the world as it is set before us.

i recently became interested in photography after working with and meeting a lot of photograpy students at my university..i think about photography in a similar way as you do, even though im a designer (*sigh*) and not a photographer, though my new mission is getting a DSLR camera :plotting:
the potential of having your own photgraphy is immense and so much can be done with a photo, so much can be said. "good artwork is inexhaustible". ic ould go on and on so i'll stop with the philosophizing.
keep it up :blackrose:

give me my wings...
My photography records what I see or a concept I wish to convey. It's just another form of sketching.

I suppose I support Zaglossus's "I suck at realism, so I paint with my cameras" view.

I can respect your persistant enthusiam, and it's a pleasure to assist. If you need me, note me and i'll give you my email. With recent pressures and projects it might become the only manner of contact.

13 years ago i was given a cheap point and shoot, set up photoshoots with dolls for the fun of it. developed the passion at 11, given a minolta x-700.. began to discover as you said, a new pair of eyes. i was walking with a friend one spring day and noticed a tiny snail amongst the plants, it took my friend about 5 minutes to finally see it, and i discovered that i see the details, i look at the world through a lense without a lense, i dream in film.. as though my dreams were experimental movies and each dream broken into shots and photographs later rememberd as merely blurs of color and feeling.
photography for me is to capture the moment of true emotion, beauty, suprise, decay-- the internal self of a person in one click. i want to show people other people, introduce the lifestyles of others to others. document the world... show people how i see the world... remember things, display fashion, have fun.. photography is my passion.... love... thats about it..

your photography by the way is beautiful. class just ended of i'd explain further..
